The Truth About Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Since water is a desirable solvent, it can easily pick up impurities. Pure water, which is often called a universal solvent, is odorless, tasteless, and colorless. Dissolved solids are any salts, cations, anions, metals, or minerals that can be dissolved in water. Total Dissolved Solids or TDS refers to the combined measurement of all dissolved organic and inorganic substances in water.
A lot of water filter advertisements imply that a lesser level of TDS is better in drinking water. There are even those that remove them entirely, thus giving the notion that it's one of the most toxic contaminants found in our drinking water. However, what we are not aware of, is the beneficial Heart Healthy Minerals and other non-toxic substances TDS contains.
As per the Water Quality Association, "Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) are the total amount of mobile charged ions, including minerals, salts or metals dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed in units as parts per million (ppm)." But the "TDS water Digital Tester" measures mostly minerals like calcium, sodium, magnesium, carbonate, chloride, and other solids.
