The Shocking Dangers of Water Fluoridation to Your Health
For many years, we have been told that water fluoridation is safe and beneficial. But, why do European countries and Japan reject the practice? In this article, let’s shed light on the truth of water fluoridation.
Fluoridation of water can be traced back to the 1940s because of the belief that ingesting fluoride strengthens the developing teeth making them resistant to cavities. That is why in many countries, especially in North America, fluoride is purposely added to the water supply – whether the people who drink the water want it or not.
But despite water fluoridation’s promising benefits, countries like China, Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, Hungary, and Japan either banned, rejected, or stopped fluoridation due to ethical, environmental, legal, and health concerns – plus the fear of fluoridation’s serious toxic effects.
Fluoride guideline values
According to the World Health Organization, the recommended fluoride levels in drinking water must only be .7 to 1.5 mg/l. Prolonged exposure to high concentrations of fluoride in water and other sources can result in dental and skeletal fluorosis, and other more serious health concerns.
Toxic effects of excess fluoride
In 2015, only 50 years after the first practice of water fluoridation, the US government lowered the amount of fluoride added to the drinking water acknowledging the fact that high intakes of fluoride can lead to tooth streaking and spottiness instead of reduced cavities. Now, only 0.7 ppm of fluoride per drop of water in the US.
However, high levels of fluoride can also result in more serious health concerns which include:
- Developmental neurotoxicity. According to a study by Dr. Landrigan and Dr Grandjean in The Lancet, epidemiological studies have documented fluoride as one of the six new additional developmental neurotoxins.
A developmental neurotoxin is a substance that poisons and harms the developing brain of a child while still inside the womb and his early childhood. These neurotoxins are also linked to other cognitive impairments.
The type of fluoride being added to our water during fluoridation is Hexafluorosilicic Acid (HFSA), a waste product of the product industry which contains trace amounts of arsenic, mercury, cadmium, thallium, lead, etc.
- Dental and skeletal fluorosis. Even the world-renowned toothpaste brand cautions the use of fluoride toothpaste for children ages 2 and below. They too acknowledge that high levels of fluoride cause dental fluorosis.
According to WHO, long-term ingestion or inhalation of excess fluoride can cause enamel fluorosis (the staining and pitting of teeth) and skeletal fluorosis (osteosclerosis, bone deformities, and calcification of tendons).
WHO also adds that it is estimated that excessive concentrations of fluoride in drinking water have been the cause of ten million cases of dental and skeletal fluorosis worldwide over a range of years.
- Endocrine system disruption. Fluoride can alter the normal endocrine response either by direct stimulation of hormone secretion, or inhibition of peripheral enzymes needed for the activation of the normal hormone.
Specifically in the thyroid gland, fluoride binds with the thyroid's iodine receptors and displaces the iodine. Without adequate iodine available, the thyroid gland can't synthesize a healthy amount of thyroid hormones.
Without enough thyroid hormones, a person may suffer from hypothyroidism., a condition that can result in symptoms such as weight problems, fatigue, life-threatening depression, memory loss, irritability, brain fog, etc.
But, if the only reason for adding fluoride in your water is to fight dental issues, is it worth the risk?
Make sure you know what’s in the water you’re serving your family with. For a safer and fluoride-free water, invest in a water filtration system specifically designed to remove fluoride and other harmful toxins from your tap. Safeguard your family from the dangers of water fluoridation today!
