Solar Distillation, Are You Prepared?
Solar Distillation, Are You Prepared? By Author: Dr. Roy Speiser
Solar water distillers can be included as part of a plan to provide an adequate supply of drinking water in the event of an emergency.
A typical distiller can produce 6 liters of water per day during the summer and about 3 liters during the winter season. There are no moving parts so it is reliable and almost maintenance free. However, due to the requirement to have sun on a regular basis, it should not be your only method of producing potable water.
If you are near a non-potable source of water you should also have other equipment including filtration, chlorination, and ultraviolet so that you have a complete filtration system capable of producing water under any circumstances. Two models of solar distillers that you might consider as part of your emergency plan include the RainMaker 550 Solar Distiller and the Solatron.
