Bottled Water: Why It Isn’t the Best Choice for Safe Water
With the different news about water contamination, more and more people are resorting to bottled water. But, doing so isn’t always the best choice for your health and the planet.
Bottled water has become a staple in our lives. Because most people think that bottled water is much safer than tap water, it can be found almost anywhere – may it be in the mall, gym, office, restaurants, and the checkout line at the grocery store.
However, bottled water may not be as clean or pure as you assume it is. It isn’t the safer option.
What’s in your bottled water
In most cases, bottled water is merely tap water. Some distributors are only bottling tap water, selling them for profit. While for some major bottled water brands, including Dasani and Aquafina, they distill and purify tap water to sell as their products.
According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), you can’t be assured that bottled water is purer than tap water. In their investigation, they found out that the bottled water brands they tested carry contaminants including pain medications.
The bottled water industry
With the reports and statistics, it’s obvious that drinking bottled water isn’t the best choice for safe water. Here are some facts you might need and want to know about the bottled water industry:
- Of all the plastic water bottles produced each year, only 23% are recycled. That leaves almost 2 million tons of plastic water bottles that end up in the landfills.
- The energy wasted on bottling and shipping water is enough to power 190, 000 homes.
- It takes three liters of water to produce one liter of bottled water. That’s three times more water used to produce a single bottle than to fill one. Imagine what a waste of water it is.
- Water that’s supposed to be free can be expensive when bottled. The price of bottled water is 10, 000 times more than the cost of tap water. Depending on your area of residence, an average 16-ounce bottled water can cost you $1 to $2.
- 40% of bottled water produced is merely taken from municipal water sources (tap water).
- The 17 million barrels of oil used in producing water bottles each year is enough to fuel one million cars for one whole year.
- In 2016, for the first time ever, the consumption of bottled water in the U.S. surpassed the sale of soda beverages – as reported by Bloomberg.
How to ensure water safety
In reducing or eliminating your bottled water purchases, you won’t only save your health; you’ll do your pocket and the planet a great favor too. Since drinking bottled water isn’t the best option for safe water, here’s what you can do to improve the taste, quality, and safety of your tap water:
- Refrigerate a pitcher of tap water in your fridge to improve its taste. Doing so can remove the chlorine taste from your tap water.
- Boil your water. One easy and inexpensive way to remove contaminants and microbes in your tap water is through boiling.
- Invest in high-quality water filtration systems. Attach them to your faucets to make tap water safe for everyone in your household.
- If you want to take water filtration to a higher level to ensure the utmost water safety in your household, have a whole-house water filtration system.
Choose well when it comes to your health and safety. Rethink your use of bottled water today, and take the safer and more environment-friendly route.
